The William Hill betting app picked a bad time to crash, shutting down just minutes before the kickoff of the Super Bowl. The outage was restricted to the state of Nevada, but effectively shut down most betting on the game for Caesars, as the app outage took down mobile bets, online bets, and kiosk bets.
To try to make up for the William Hill betting app crash, the company is now giving away tens of thousands of dollars in what they are calling “free sports bets”. The hope is players will accept their apology for the outage, and some good publicity couldn’t hurt right now.
Significantly, if this sort of thing could happen to one of the biggest sports books… on one of the biggest sports betting days… in one of the biggest gambling locations… then it could certainly happen just about anywhere. State officials have been looking into the matter, but so far we’ve seen no explanations posted.
Making matters even worse is that just prior to the William Hill betting app crash, the Nevada Gaming Control Board had broken up an embezzlement scheme within the company, perpetrated by some of their employees. Court records indicate that two employees are facing multiple felony charges, and that they had stolen over $100,000.
