The latest edition of This Week in Gambling looks at legal Super Bowl betting in America, which experts believe will exceed $1 billion this year for the first time ever! Of course, that doesn’t mean there won’t be some ‘illegal’ Super Bowl betting taking place!
This year’s Big Game is expected to generate over one billion dollars in Super Bowl betting through licensed bookmakers. Last year, legal bets barely cracked $500,000. However, so-called ‘illegal’ bets still far outnumber any legitimate wagers, even with the addition on New York’s regulated mobile sports betting market.
Additionally, the numbers for New York online gambling and sports betting are finally in for January. Players in the Empire State bet just about $1.6 billion in only a bit over three weeks, which is the largest amount ever recorded for regulated sports wagers in America.
And while we’re on the topic of football , the NFL made an additional $1.8 billion off of sponsorship deals last year, and a large chuck of that cash came from gambling companies! Remember when the league fought sports betting expansion in an effort to prevent this from happening? Boy how times have changed.
