Our weekly gambling news video is discussing how Nevada may possibly regulate Esports and what that could mean. And while the Nevada Gaming Control Board looks into the matter, rumors of esports betting misconduct has been published involving the NBA 2K League, where six players and a coach have been disqualified.
Things are going well for Nevada gaming, as the state just hit it’s 19th consecutive billion dollar month in revenue. Now the state is considering the regulation of electronic sports, or Esports, which would allow gamblers to place bets on video games through sports books.
Placing bets on video games does raise concerns about the integrity of the games. And now, there have been accusations surrounding betting on Esports games in the NBA 2K Esports league. In fact, six players and a coach have been “disqualified” for betting on games, or attempting to place bets on games, which has led to increased concerns.
Instead, this may actually demonstrate that it is entirely possible to regulate Esports successfully. Clearly, the preventative measures in place to detect and prevent this sort of thing did their job. So perhaps, betting on the outcome of video games will be viable. After all, people have been betting on stranger things for years.
Esports are competitions using video games, often in the form of organized, multiplayer competitions between professional players, individually or on teams. These competitions have long been a part of the video game culture, but were largely between amateurs until the late 2000s. It was then that professional “gamers” in these events began to live stream and the industry exploded in popularity.
